CAMP TANDIL 2018

Evidence of butchery processing found in skeletons of the rodent Lagostomus maximus (vizcacha pampeana) from archaeological sites of the Late Late Holocene (1000 to 600 B.P.) from the Eastern Tandilia Sierras (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) is described. The bone diversity recorded, the number of specimens, the cut marks, scraping marks and intentional fractures indicate that the vizcachas were brought whole to the sites and that skinning, disarticulation, fleshing and fracturing processes were applied to them. Comparison with the exploitation of vizcacha during previous millennia in the same sierras shows that it was not until the Late Holocene that this species acquired greater numerical importance and more elaborate butchering processes were applied to it. This phenomenon is linked to the development of a subsistence of intensification and diversification in which small game was predominant in Tandilia.

Butchering evidence found in skeletons of the plains vizcacha (Lagostomus maximus) from Late Holocene (1000 to 600 B.P.) archaeological sites in the Western Edge of Tandilia Range (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) are described. Skeletal diversity, specimen abundance, and cut marks, especially scraping marks and intentional fractures, indicate that entire plains vizcacha carcasses were introduced to the sites where they were processed through skinning, disarticulation, filleting, and fracturing for marrow. Comparison with earlier vizcacha exploitation in the same area suggests that vizcacha increased in numerical importance and that the butchery process was elaborated only toward the end of the late Holocene. This phenomenon is linked to the development of diversification and intensification of areal economies in the Pampean Region where small game was preponderant in the Tandilia Range.

La Piedra Movediza of Tandil

It was created in 1973. It is located six kilometers from the city of Tandil, surrounded by the sierras of the Tandilia system; the maximum height is the Venado hill of 389 meters. It has an area of 150 hectares, with an area of approximately 22 hectares where the Biological Station is located, a place where species are bred to repopulate the reserve, and the Interpretation Center, where visitors can access information related to the reserve’s activities.

The geographer Huberto Cuevas Acevedo was the promoter for the reserve to become a fact, through the formation of the «Agrupación Amigos de la Reserva Natural de la Sierra del Tigre» (Friends of the Sierra del Tigre Natural Reserve Association), created on October 30, 1972.[3] The reserve was created in 1972.
